Health Minister, Dr Elijah Muchima, has announced that Zambia received a total of US$1.8 billion in grants from the Global Fund since 2003.
This year, the government and the Global Fund signed a $349 million grant for the control of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria, covering the period from 2024 to 2026.
Muchima made the announcement during the handover of 115 new vehicles to health institutions and provincial health offices.
The vehicles, procured at a cost of $4 million with support from the Global Fund, are part of a broader effort to support the implementation of the decentralization policy in the health sector.
Additionally, 10 vehicles funded by the World Bank would be distributed to all 10 Provincial Health Offices.
“This initiative will enhance the response to gender-based violence, a significant human rights issue in the country,” Muchima stated.
He stated that strengthening health systems was a key focus for the New Dawn Government under President Hakainde Hichilema.

The new vehicles are intended to improve the efficiency of health service delivery across the regions.
Among the beneficiaries, the Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies Agency (ZAMMSA) received 66 vehicles to support the distribution of medicines and medical supplies.
Annie Sampa, Chairperson of the Global Fund Country Coordinating Mechanism Oversight Committee, expressed the organization’s commitment to ensuring that essential health commodities reached their destinations efficiently.
“The CCM remains dedicated to mobilizing additional resources and overseeing their effective utilization to support Zambia’s health sector,” Sampa said.
