A Lusaka businessman who denied stealing ex-President Edgar Lungu’s television sets has been sentenced to five years imprisonment with hard labour.
Lusaka magistrate, Chrispin Hampungani, sentenced Angel Chipasha to five years imprisonment after he found him guilty of breaking into the former President’s house and stealing two television sets valued at over K60, 000.
When the matter came up for judgement at the Lusaka Magistrate Court on Tuesday, Hampungani ruled the prosecution proved their case through witnesses beyond reasonable doubts.
He also ruled that the house was well secured together with the property and so for someone to have broken into, it meant that he was a dangerous criminal.
He said Chipasha needed to be in prison for a longer period because the offence he committed was a serious one.
However, Chipasha’s lawyers applied for bail pending an appeal.
One of the lawyers said the five-year sentence was harsh, and that his client was just a middle man who was sent to sell the television.
The court declined the application stating that there were no exceptional circumstances shown that could have convinced the court to grant the convict bail pending an appeal as it was now possible to have an appeal heard within a reasonable time as the court were not busy.
Chipasha, during the night of August 9, 2022 in Lusaka, did break and enter into the dwelling house of Lungu with intent to steal therein and did steal two television sets altogether valued at K60, 000, the property of Shimbinzyani Chavula.
