President Hichilema offers jobs to volunteer health workers, regrets loss of lives to cholera epidemic

President Hakainde Hichilema has directed the Ministry of Health to employ all health workers serving as voluteers at the cholera centers across the country.

Hichilema noted that the frontline workers had been risking their lives and that government had seen the need to reward them for their dedication to serving those affected with cholera.

The Head of State said this on Sunday when he visited the National Cholera Center at Heros Stadium in Lusaka.

He urged Zambians to take decisive action in a collective effort to eradicate the outbreak which had claimed 622 lives and affected about 16, 216 since October last year.

“We have seen their determination to save lives of others, hence placing them on permanent jobs across the country,” the President said.

Hichilema conveyed sincere condolences to families who had lost loved ones to the disease and extended goodwill wishes for a quick recovery to patients admitted across the country.

He paid tribute to frontline health personnel for their tireless and courageous efforts in saving lives.

Expressing gratitude, the President also acknowledged the support of various local and international partners joining forces to combat cholera.

“With concerted efforts, it is gratifying to note that the cholera cases have continued reducing,” Hichilema stated

He emphasized the importance of maintaining good hygiene practices at the personal and household levels and called for collective cooperation in the ongoing fight against cholera.

Hichilema urged citizens to remain vigilant and cooperate in the battle against cholera, emphasizing the severity and lethality of the disease.

“We remain grateful to all citizens adhering to health calls in combating this disease and as government, we will be taking drastic measures to ensure that this disease is fought once and for all,” he said.

Hichilema noted that a life lost as a result of unsafe environment was painful and that as a country Zambia should not allow such including unplanned settlements.

“Cleanliness is next to Godliness. May we all ensure that we keep our surroundings, food and water clean and secure,” he advised.
